Access to medXchange services can easily be integrated into existing physician practice management systems and micro-computer systems (PC or Apple) or "hand-held" computers with no additional investment. The only requirement is Internet access with a standard Internet Browser.

Online access to the medXchange services is provided through a highly secure connection over the public Internet or over specialised healthcare extra-nets such as:

• The Swiss Health Information Network, HIN
• The UK National Health Service network, NHSnet

The Professional Health Key identifies the physician or healthcare professional and acts as his electronic signature. Physicians and healthcare professionals must be registered with medXchange and be issued a Professional Health Key in order to use the medXchange services and access patient electronic medical records and documentation.

The Patient Health Key identifies the individual and allows access to the medXchange services and his confidential electronic medical records and documentation stored on the medXchange database.

medXchange supports a number of Health Key technologies.

• Industry standard SmartCard with a standard SmartCard reader. A number of SmartCard formats can be used.
• EC HealthCard standard to be effective as of May 2004.
• National Health Card standards such as French Carte Vitale, German MediCard
• Financial SmartCard standards (e.g. VISA, Master Card, AMEX, Euro Card, etc.)
• Proprietary Health SmartCard
• Industry standard USB Memory Key
• User ID and Password
• Mini CD-ROM
